Ratnagiri Balamurugan Vellore

Ratnagiri Balamurugan Vellore

He was working as a typist in the electricity board. He was only 27 years old and had two daughters and a son. Once, when he had the darshan of Lord Muruga at the temple on the Ratnagiri hill, he felt a rapturous experience and slipped into a state of trance. After this experience, he underwent a total change. He changed his get-up, he started wearing only loin cloth. He gave up speech and took a vow of silence. He wrote the replies to the queries of devotees on paper. People called him "Mouna samiyar". Dakshinamoorthy alias Sachidananda became "Mouna samiyar". He relinquished family life and became a slave of Lord Muruga.

History of the temple

Ratnagiri Balamuruga temple was built in the 14th century, AD. Initially, the figure of Muruga was made with clay, then, subsequently, it was made with stone. Thiruparangundram, Thiruchendur, Thiruvavinankudi, Thiruverakam and Pazhamudhisolai are glorified as "Kundruthoradalâ". Arunagirinathar, who lived in the 14th century had sung in praise of Balamuruga at the Ratnagiri temple as "Ratnagirivaazh Muruga, ilaiya vaaramarar Perumale "..., praising Muruga as the commander of the Devas.

Ratnagiri Balamurugan Vellore

This sthala is glorified for two things - first, Balamuruga is portrayed with His two consorts Valli and Devyani. Second - Guruji Swami, who speaks about the greatness of Ratnagiri Muruga to the devotees, is a soothsayer here. Devotees, immersed in their great love and devotion to Lord Muruga throng this sthala all the time.

Temple layout

A good road has been laid to reach the hill temple. Temples have been built to Lord Vinayaka not only at the bottom but also atop the hill. A golden car has been made so artistically for the "ulaa" (procession) of Lord Muruga. During the procession inside the temple the deity is adorned so beautifully with ornaments made of gold and silver as well as stone-studded jewelry. The vimana of the sanctum has been built as per the style of Chola architecture. The sanctum has been beautifully built with granite stones. The five-level majestic Rajagopuram, bearing Lord Muruga's spear on it captures our attention on entering the temple. A special feature of this temple is that archana is being done in Tamil language for the Tamil God Lord Muruga. This facilitates even ordinary people to understand the meaning of the archana. There's a beautiful separate temple for Goddess Durga in this sthala.

Temple services

Pure drinking water is available at the temple. Also, there are toilet facilities. There are four marriage halls inside the temple. The charges for them are nominal. Also, other facilities have been provided for the convenience of the devotees.
